HAIR REMOVAL - LADIES WAXING

About Waxing: A Brief History

Waxing and hair removal have a long history, with roots stretching from ancient Egyptian practices to the modern techniques used today. In many cultures, hair removal was associated not only with appearance, but also with hygiene, cleanliness, and comfort in warmer climates.

 Ancient Origins

In ancient civilisations, where running water was not always readily available, removing hair helped reduce discomfort and minimise the risk of lice and other infestations. Iconic images of Egyptian Pharaohs with elaborate headwear and shaved priests reflect how hair removal formed part of personal care and presentation.

Waxing in the 20th Century

The 20th century brought major changes to waxing, shaped by fashion, media, and the beauty industry. As Hollywood stars influenced beauty standards, smooth, hair-free skin became increasingly desirable. This trend grew during the 1920s and 1930s, when beach holidays, shorter skirts, and sleeveless dresses became more popular.

Methods of Hair Removal

There are several effective hair removal methods available today. Each offers different benefits depending on the treatment area, skin type, hair growth, comfort level, and desired result.

Waxing | Sugaring | Threading | Laser | Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) | Electrolysis

Waxing and sugaring are long-established techniques, while laser hair removal is one of the more recent innovations.

Choosing the Right Method

Choosing the most suitable hair removal method is a personal decision. It depends on practical preferences, skin response, treatment goals, and the skill of the salon practitioner.

Peelable Wax (Hot Wax)

Peelable Wax, also known as Hot Wax, is ideal for sensitive areas such as Brazilian, Hollywood, bikini, facial areas, nose, and ears. It is applied in a thicker layer, left to cool and set, and then gently removed by peeling it away.

Best suited to intimate areas, facial waxing, and sensitive skin

Adheres mainly to the hair rather than the skin

Helps reduce discomfort during removal

Less likely to cause irritation or redness

Strip Wax (Warm Wax)

Strip Wax, or Warm Wax, is applied in a thin layer using a spatula or roller, then removed with specially formulated paper or cotton strips. It is a quick and efficient method suitable for larger areas and a wide range of hair types.

Suitable for both strong, thick hair and finer hair

Leaves no wax residue on the skin after treatment

Some redness may occur, but it usually subsides within 24 hours

Our Approach

We use Perron Rigot Vegan Wax and combine both Peelable Wax, also known as Hot Wax, and Strip Wax, also known as Warm Wax. This allows us to tailor each treatment to the client’s needs, delivering comfortable and effective results across different treatment areas.

Waxing for Transgender Clients

Waxing can be a suitable hair removal option for transgender clients who want smooth, well-maintained skin. While waxing is not permanent, regular treatments may gradually soften and weaken hair growth over time. We encourage clients to book a consultation to discuss the treatment area, ask questions, and receive personalised advice. Consultations are carried out in a comfortable, confidential, discreet, and professional manner, with respect for each client’s individual needs.

Pre-Wax Preparation

To achieve the best results from your waxing treatment, it is important to follow these pre-waxing steps:

Exfoliate gently 48 hours before your session using a mild scrub to remove dead skin. This helps to prepare the skin by eliminating surface debris and promoting a smoother waxing experience.

Take a shower at least one hour before your appointment. Clean skin ensures optimal wax adhesion and reduces the risk of irritation.

Avoid steam rooms and saunas before waxing. Exposure to excessive heat can sensitise the skin and make waxing less comfortable.

Hydrate daily with a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep skin soft. Well-moisturised skin is more resilient and less prone to irritation during waxing.

Cleanse the area with a gentle, non-irritating soap before your session. This removes any residual oils or impurities that might hinder the waxing process.

Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams on the day of waxing to ensure optimal wax adhesion. Products on the skin can interfere with the grip of the wax.

Avoid using products containing retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs for five to seven days before your appointment to prevent skin thinning. These ingredients make the skin more sensitive and susceptible to irritation.

Refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours prior, as they can increase sensitivity. This will help minimise discomfort during waxing.

Post-Wax Care

Following your waxing treatment, adhere to these guidelines to promote healing and maintain smooth skin:

Do not touch the waxed area to prevent the transfer of bacteria that may cause breakouts or infections. Keeping hands away from treated skin reduces the risk of irritation.

Avoid oily or drying products; refrain from heavy creams or alcohol-based toners, as these can disrupt the healing process. Gentle, non-comedogenic products are preferable.

Do not wear skintight clothing over waxed areas to reduce irritation and the risk of ingrown hairs, scarring, infection, or delayed recovery. Loose clothing helps the skin breathe and heal.

Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 48 hours to prevent burns or pigmentation. Newly waxed skin is more sensitive to ultraviolet light.

Refrain from hot showers, swimming pools, or hot tubs, as chlorine and heat can irritate open pores for up to 48 hours. This precaution helps avoid post-waxing discomfort and infection.

Avoid strenuous activity for 24–48 hours, as sweating may clog follicles and increase bumps. Rest allows the skin to recover.

Do not undergo chemical peels or laser treatments for at least one week after waxing, as these can strip the skin. Allowing ample recovery time is essential for maintaining skin health.

Do not exfoliate the skin immediately post-waxing, as this can transfer bacteria, cause irritation, lead to infection, and delay recovery. Wait until the skin has fully healed before resuming exfoliation.

Hair Growth & Length Consideration

The ideal hair length for body waxing falls between 0.5 cm and 1 cm, or approximately ¼ to ¾ inch. This length allows for a smooth and clean removal of hair. For sensitive areas such as Bikini, Brazilian, and Hollywood, it is advisable to trim the hair at home using clean, sanitised scissors to minimise discomfort during the waxing process.

If you have recently shaved, it is important to wait at least three weeks, or until the hair has grown to at least 1 cm, before booking your waxing appointment. Shaved hair develops strong roots, and if the hair is too short, waxing may not be effective in removing it entirely.

Wearing tight clothing and sitting for prolonged periods with legs crossed or resting on the knee can encourage hair to grow horizontally. In such cases, the hair may remain visible beneath the skin but cannot be removed effectively through waxing. To help prevent this, it is recommended to wear slightly loose clothing and exfoliate once a week, particularly in areas where horizontal hair growth is likely. Please note, it is not the responsibility of the Beauty Therapist to remove these individual hairs for you.
